PetGene (furbabygene.com) is an independent, research-first resource that explains what dog and cat DNA tests can — and cannot — tell you. We read the peer-reviewed studies, the veterinary-genetics literature, and public-agency guidance, then translate them into plain-language explanations and side-by-side comparisons that ordinary pet owners can actually use.

Our mission
Genetic testing for pets has gone from a niche curiosity to a mainstream purchase, but the marketing around it often outruns the science. Our mission is simple: help you understand your dog or cat’s breed ancestry, trait insights, and hereditary-risk markers as information, not as a medical verdict. A DNA result is a screening insight, not a diagnosis — and we say so on every page where it matters.
We are independent
PetGene is not a testing company, a laboratory, an animal hospital, or a provider of veterinary services. We do not sell test kits and we are not owned by any brand we write about. That independence is the whole point: it lets us describe the strengths and limits of each service without a stake in which one you choose.
Who writes PetGene
PetGene is produced by the PetGene editorial team — research-literate editors who read primary sources and structure them for a general audience. To be completely clear: none of our editors are veterinarians, and nothing on this site is veterinary or medical advice. For any decision about your pet’s health, diet, or treatment, please consult a licensed veterinarian. Our role is to help you walk into that conversation better informed.
What we mean by “screening, not diagnosis”
Consumer pet DNA tests report things like breed composition, coat and body traits, carrier status for inherited conditions, and genetic risk markers. A risk marker indicates possibility, not certainty: it can suggest that your pet may have an increased genetic risk for a condition, but it does not mean your pet has that condition or ever will. These tests are not FDA-approved medical devices, and they do not replace a veterinary examination.
